Large Hadron Collider Experiment-A scientific marvel

The never ending endeavor of man to know about the origin of the universe has lead to the formulation of many theories.Einstein with his theory of relativity gave a whole new perspective about time and space.Similarly Quantum mechanics was yet another breakthrough in understanding the universe. However for many years physicists were having trouble in unifying the two. There are a lot of missing pieces in the grand unification theory. With the data collected from the large hadron collider, scientists hope that they can fill in the last pieces of the jigsaw.

So what is the large hadron collider?Large hadron collider or LHC in short, is the largest and most powerful particle accelerator in the world that can collide opposing particle beams like protons at 7 TeV/particle or lead ions at 574 TeV/ion.This collision generates a lot of subatomic particles which can then be detected. It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research(CERN) after 24 years of planning. It is truly a machine of gigantic proportions. The total cost is over 3 billion euros and over 80,000 tons of construction material have been used.
Basically, LHC is built in a circular tunnel 26.7 km in circumference. The tunnel is buried around 50 to 175 m. underground. It straddles the Swiss and French borders on the outskirts of Geneva. The first beams were circulated successfully on September 10,2008 . Unfortunately on 19th September a fault developed on a small number of superconducting magnets. The repair will require a long technical intervention which overlaps with the planned winter shutdown. The LHC will, therefore, not see beam again before spring 2009.One of the most amazing feature of the LHC are the superconducting magnets. They can generate magnetic fields up to 180,000 times stronger than the earth.Further, it took 16 months to cool the 8000 magnets dispersed around the ring to their operational temperature of 1.9 Kelvin!
LHC accelerates particles to near light velocities and collides them head on.Protons inside the LHC despite their unimaginably small size will have kinetic energy equivalent to that of a 40 ton mass moving at 150 km/h.Physicists hope that one such collision might prove the existence of many particles which till now have been only theoretically surmised, the most famous of which is the Higgs-boson which is believed to assign mass to a high energy density region. It will also help us to understand the state of matter that prevailed after the Big Bang, the quark gluon plasma and many such things.Through some experiments scientists hope to generate small black holes inside the LHC(don't worry!Stephen Hawking proved that the smaller the black hole the faster it evaporates) or dark particles which are yet to be discovered on earth.

So how do they collect data from the collision? The particles generated from the collision follow distinctive trails as predicted by mathematical equations. They can be traced by giant detectors. These tracks are stored as raw digital data and later analyzed by over 5000 scientists who perform research for CERN at 300 locations spread over 50 countries.Depending on the intensity of the particle beams, millions of such collisions take place every second.Over 99 % of the data recorded will be discarded immediately. For every 10 million collisions only 2 or 3 will be worth observing.A total of 60,000 processors will be used to filter the data which are then stored on hard drives-this alone will amount to around 15 petabytes of data per year per detector.
There are mainly 4 detectors which track the particles generated namely ATLAS, CMS, ALICE and LHCb detectors. The compact muon solenoid spectrometer(CMS) particle detector, th

Software Review & Tutorial-Free 3gp converter from topviewsoft

For all those people out there who thought that making a 3gp video for their cellphones are only for geeks are seriously mistaken. The free 3gp converter from topviewsoft is definitely a software for the masses. It is an easy to use video converter which converts batches of most popular video formats including AVI,DivX,Xvid,MPEG,VOB,WMV,ASF,MP4, MOV,RM,RMVB,Flv,and SWF to 3gp or 3g2 files that can be played on supporting cellphones with ease. The output video codecs include MPEG4, XVID and H263; the audio codecs include AMR-NB and AAC-LC. You can also set the video size, quality, frame-rate; the audio bit-rate, frequency, channel. There are two zoom modes: Stretch and Letterbox, which will add black letterbox on output video to keep aspect ratio. The most interesting feature of this software is it's user interface, which makes the job as easy as stealing a candy from a kid!Let me show how you can make a 3gp video clip for your file.

First you need to download the software from the publisher's site. The download size is about 3.53 m.b.To download the software Click Here.
Once you've downloaded the software, install it to a desired location just like you would with any other software. After finishing the install a shortcut must appear either on your desktop or on your start menu.Use it to run the programme.
First you need to set the output directory. This is where the converted videos are saved.Set the output directory by clicking Select and browsing to the desired folder.Next you need to add video files to be converted.Do this by clicking add and from the window that appears, navigate to the desired file. You can select multiple files at the same time(batch conversion).
Now you need to set the audio and video parameters.Find out which audio and video codecs suit best for your cellphones by trial and error method. Now you need to set the resolution of the output file.Find out the resolution of your cellphone either by looking in the user manual or go to the site GSMarena and search for your cellphone model.Let me assume from this point that your screen resolution is 320x240.However most video files look better when converted to 320x200 resolution even if the display resolution is 320x240.Like I said earlier, use trial and error method to find out what works out best for your cellphone.
Now you need to set the video quality. This is the most distinguishing feature of this software.Other softwares require video bit-rate information to assign quality to the file but in this converter you can choose the quality based on a scale ranging from 1 to 20!1 is for the best quality and 20 is for the worst.Note that with increasing quality, size of the output file will be large.I recommend a quality level of 10 as appropriate(it largely depends on the quality of the input file also).Next you need to set the framerate. The higher the framerate lesser will be the motion blur. However most of the middle end handsets can support a maximum of only 24 fps(frames per second). In zoom mode u can either choose to 'stretch' the video to the full screen size or use 'letterbox' to resize the height and width to keep the aspect ratio. You need not worry about the audio settings if you are a beginner. However you sure may experiment on it!After you are done, click convert now to start converting. One of the key features of this software is its processing speed. So after the files are converted, transfer them to your cell to find out if it is working. If you cannot play it, the cell doesn't support the codecs you have chosen.Start all over to find out the right balance of codecs, quality and framerate for your cellphone.

So there you have it!You are now a top order video converting geek thanks to topviewsoft!
Have fun

Nanotechnology-a double edged sword!

Of the many breakthroughs of science and technology, many consider Nanotechnology as the technology of the future.Physicist Richard Feynman at an American Physical Society meeting at Caltech on December 29,1959 put forward the possibility of direct manipulation of individual atoms as a more powerful form of synthetic chemistry than those used at the time, through his famous lecture "There's plenty of room at the bottom"
(Click here to read the lecture )

Nanotechnology revolutionizes nearly every field of science we know.Nano scale robots called Nanobots can easily pass through living cells and tissues and even into the blood stream to repair damaged cells or even destroy harmful ones like cancer cells.Despite using them to cure fatal diseases research is under way on using them to prevent it.It is proposed that nano scale machinery can act as a replacement for natural cells like neurons and DNAs.
When coming to military applications, Nanobots can be used as fail-safe surveillance systems. Also with the huge miniaturization possibilities of nanotechnology, Guns and missiles capable of hitting a target with an error of a few nanometers is not a distant reality!Specially fabricated Photon band gap materials and carbon nanotubes can be used for light synthesis or even light manipulation(They can be used to guide photons through a desired path!).The best feature of this technology is that it is highly energy efficient.Nanotechnology also helps us to fabricate light triggered switching devices which can be used to create Transistors,Logic gates e.t.c. that too at the smallest of sizes! This gives rise to the prospect of photonics replacing electronics in the near future. With photonics, one can create today's supercomputers into tomorrows cellphones and integrate today's cellphones into tomorrows history books!

However, Nanotechnology like every other technology has a dark side.Due to the quantum level sizes of nano particles, they have properties much different from that of their larger counterparts. For example, gold, which is an inactive metal, is highly active in nano form.Heavy metals which are poisonous to humans are thought to have medicinal values in its nano form! Moreover, nano materials have such a small size that they can easily diffuse through the living tissues and reach the blood stream. They can also damage DNAs.Hence to study the toxic effects of nanomaterials, a new science called nanotoxicology has been adopted.Scientists have hence adopted a legislation system for the use of nanomaterials.Carbon nanotubes due to their needle like structure can cause diseases similar to asbestosis or even mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the lungs caused by exposure to asbestos). Some nano materials are also thought to increase free radicals in the body and result in cancer.

In spite of these dangers,Nanotechnology is definitely "The wheel of change running on a tight rope"

Why does water put out fire?

It seems a pretty simple question upon first look. The truth is, though it is a simple question, not all supply the right answer.First let me explain what water actually does to fire.

When water comes into contact with a burning object, some part of it changes into steam, for which it steals most of the heat of the burning object. After all, to transform boiling water into steam we need five times more heat than is required to heat the same amount of water from 0 to 100°C.
Secondly, the steam thus produced occupies more volume than the water giving rise to it.The steam envelops the burning object and keeps fresh air away.Without air, combustion is impossible.

Ironically though,to cause water to act as a still better extinguisher of fires, gunpowder is added to it!There is logic in this paradox.Gunpowder burns out quickly, giving off in the process a large quantity of noncombustible gas. This gas envelops the burning object and complicates combustion.
